I Went to Camp

I Went to Camp is a family-friendly word game that I have been playing for *cough-cough* 40ish years. I can only assume the game has been played for far longer by many others. I am unsure what the original or official name is for the game, but I have always known it as “I Went to Camp”.

Number of players:

Endless (how much time do you have?) LOL

How to Play:

Decide who is to play first. That person starts the game by saying “I went to camp, and I brought…”.
(Fun tip: change it up and say “I went to the moon…”, or “I went to school…”, etc. to create a theme or just some diversity. Whatever you pick is what everyone says for the entire game).
You can pick any item you wish – food, pets, objects – whatever you want. Continue in a circle, or some sort of order, having each player saying the same starting sentence, but bringing a different item with them. It is the most fun to have a variety of items brought, and you’ll see why later.

After all players have decided (and announced) what they are bringing, the starting player makes up a sentence using the item that they brought. Each other player, in the same order, repeats the sentence, but replaces the item of the starting player, with the item that they brought. Hilarity is sure to follow, so be sure to play on an empty bladder! 🙂

Once all players have repeated the starting players sentence, using their brought item, the next player makes up a sentence using their item, and play continues until everyone has had a turn to make up a sentence.

Game example:

P1: “I went to camp, and I brought a roll of toilet paper“.
P2: “I went to camp, and a brought a bag of chips“.
P3: “I went to camp, and I brought my favourite teddy bear“.
P4: “I went to camp, and I brought a pair of scissors“.

Now, I’m sure you can see how this could go horribly wrong, but I will keep it as family-friendly as possible in my example. 😉

P1: “I ran out of kindling, and so used my roll of toilet paper to help start a fire”.
P2: “I ran out of kindling, and so used my bag of chips to help start a fire”.
P3: “I ran out of kindling, and so used my favourite teddy bear to help start a fire”.
P4: “I ran out of kindling, and so used my pair of scissors to help start a fire”.

P2: “I was very hungry after my hike, and ate my entire bag of chips“!
P3: “I was very hungry after my hike, and ate my entire favourite teddy bear“!
P4: “I was very hungry after my hike, and ate my entire pair of scissors“!
P1: “I was very hungry after my hike, and ate my entire roll of toilet paper“!

P3: “I hugged my favourite teddy bear when I heard noises outside of my tent”.
P4: “I hugged my pair of scissors when I heard noises outside of my tent”.
P1: “I hugged my roll of toilet paper when I heard noises outside of my tent”.
P2: “I hugged my bag of chips when I heard noises outside of my tent”.

P4: “I used my pair of scissors to cut the twine around my bundle of firewood”.
P1: “I used my roll of toilet paper to cut the twine around my bundle of firewood”.
P2: “I used my bag of chips to cut the twine around my bundle of firewood”.
P3: “I used my favourite teddy bear to cut the twine around my bundle of firewood”.

This is a game that can be as silly as your imagination allows. If someone brings their pet hamster, it could be really funny, or demented, (depending on your humour) to bring a food item, knowing that when it’s your turn to make a sentence that player will likely be eating it. Just keep in mind that on your turn, you might be left cuddling your hot dog.
